Epps does a very nice job of documenting the ‘golden rule’ across different cultures and historical eras, going back to some of its earliest known usages. He builds a very strong case for the universality of the rule and its importance to human beings, regardless of our cultural heritage. The book is well-written and very approachable.Barbara Martin is the narrator, and her enthusiasm immediately caught my attention and helped draw me into the book. She took what could be a very dry topic and instilled life into it through her vocal variety. She spoke clearly and annunciated key words and phrases to help emphasize their importance as well as the author’s points. She is adept at mixing in pauses to help draw out the meaning of key passages. Barbara’s ability to speak multiple languages in the book emphasized the universality of the golden rule and its importance across cultures. I was totally blown away by her facility with Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic and Hebrew. All in all, it’s a very good book which is made better by Barbara Martin’s narration.
