A memoir of a boy's love of swimming and his quest to become an Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) frogman. Black describes the mentors of his youth who became his models for swimming. He provides a history of the UDT and SEALs. He tells of an injury while in UDT training that denied him his life-long dream, but led to a life-long profession. The story also tells of how high achievers---such as Andre Agassi, Tiger Woods, and Julia Child---dedicated themselves to a work ethic which led to the fulfillment of their dreams and goals. The book recounts the author's experience in the Vietnam War, including the Tonkin Gulf incident, Marine raids, and the historic Danang beach landings. Black describes how and why we must "put in the time" if we are going to have any chance of success. With himself as the model, he explains how average people can be successful if they are dedicated to their efforts. He analyzes Malcolm Gladwell's outlier concept and David Brooks' comments on Gladwell's views on social determinism.

A Swimmer Odyssey From the Plains to the Pacific Uyless Black 9780980010718 Books Reviews
Uyless Black doesn't wear a cowboy hat and boots, but his latest book, A Swimmer's Odyssey From the Plains to the Pacific, shows his core values from being raised on a ranch. In his journey from those first years on the High Plains of New Mexico to his pursuit of his passion, becoming an Underwater Demolition Team (UDT)frogman, he never strayed from his core values.
Black's unusual perspective of ranch life contributed to his passion for swimming. His visual acuity, while observing frogs, led to his teaching himself to swim in the ponds scattered around his father's ranch. His remarkable visualization of settings takes the reader from the High Plains to the Pacific.
Black's years in Vietnam delivers a personal look at a war that became politically unpopular. His perspective, still rooted in his core values, shows his belief in putting in the time and constantly motivated practice to achieve his dream of becoming a UDT.
The reader, caught up in the spirit of Black's passion to achieve, feels angst when Black suffers an injury in UDT training forcing him to redirect his life-long career passion.
Black's journey is more than an adventure; it is an odyssey through adversity to the ultimate success that came to him. As Black said, "I had come a long way from those plains, but mostly in miles, not in perspective." A great book; a great gift!
This book is full on every page of wonderful memories, from growing up in a small town in the 1940's and 1950's to the achievement of long dreamed of adventures in the Navy as a Seal UDT. This book is factual, entertaining and a great read from front to back.
Uyless Black's latest book, A Swimmer's Odyssey From the Plains to the Pacific, is an autobiography, one which provides the backdrop to a treatise on his ideas about what it takes to succeed in one's chosen endeavors. Through series of well written passages about events and periods in his life, he attempts to show the reader that his ideas make sense, and in the process, gives us a book well worth reading.
We're introduced to interesting people. These include friends around the local swimming pool, his very able and memorable swimming instructor, a U.S. Navy Admiral, fraternity guys, computer nerds and one extra special student of his (two if you count a millisecond size dog!). The reader needn't be particularly interested in swimming to appreciate the author's writings of these people and events.
Black presents an intelligent discussion of historical events that were happening during his time in the Navy during the Viet Nam War. Whether writing about his ideas of acquiring and using good teaching methods, attitudes toward his duties in the Navy, what it takes to be successful in the field of computer software development, his admiration of certain individuals in his life, he keeps the reader interested in what he's saying.
For example, Black interleaves the concepts of Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers, throughout this writing. The 10,000 hour Rule is brought into the book in a series of case studies, not all dealing with swimming, that provide the reader with substantial food for thought. Black's commentary on a disagreement he has with one of Gladwell's ideas was especially interesting. He discusses what occurred with Nujood Ali, the 10 year old divorced Yemeni girl, and presents his thoughts in a direct and intelligent manner.
Black's point that `putting in the time' is a requirement for success is well presented; he's written a good book.
